Workplace Bullying

Dealing with bullying in the workplace can be a stressful experience, and there are several psychological strategies to effectively address bullying:

  1. Stay Calm: It can be difficult to remain calm in the face of bullying, but it is important to avoid responding with anger or aggression. Take a deep breath and try to remain composed.
  2. Use Assertive Communication: Use assertive communication to address the bullying. This involves expressing your needs and feelings clearly and directly, while respecting the needs and feelings of the other person. For example, you could say, “I feel uncomfortable when you speak to me in that tone of voice. Could you please speak to me respectfully?” Or, try the ‘DEAR MAN’ strategy in the ‘Being Assertive Beginner’ in the ‘Boundaries’ tools section.
  3. Set Boundaries: Set clear boundaries and communicate them to the person who is bullying you. Let them know what behaviour is acceptable and what is not. If the bullying continues, enforce your boundaries by removing yourself from the situation or reporting the incident.
  4. Seek Support: Seek support from trusted colleagues, mentors, or professional organisations. It is important to have someone to talk to and to get guidance on how to handle the situation.
  5. Practice Self-Care: Bullying can be a stressful and emotionally draining experience. Practice self-care regularly to manage stress and maintain your well-being. This may include exercise, meditation, spending time with loved ones, or seeking professional support.
  6. Consider Mediation: If the bullying persists, consider mediation as a way to resolve the conflict. Mediation involves a neutral third party who can facilitate a discussion between you and the person who is bullying you.

Remember, you have the right to a safe and respectful workplace. By staying calm, using assertive communication, setting boundaries, seeking support, practicing self-care, and considering mediation, you can effectively address bullying in the workplace.
