Returning to Work – Post Baby

Returning to work as a pilot after having a baby is a significant transition that requires careful planning and adjustment. Here are some strategies to help you navigate this period: 

1. Plan ahead:

Begin planning for your return to work well in advance. Consider factors such as childcare arrangements, schedules, and any necessary adjustments to your work routine. Discuss your plans with your employer to ensure a smooth transition. 

2. Establish a support system:

Build a reliable support system to assist with childcare responsibilities. This could include family members, trusted friends, or professional childcare providers. Ensure that you have a solid plan in place to handle unexpected situations or emergencies. 

3. Ease back into work gradually:

If possible, consider a phased return to work. Start with shorter shifts or part-time hours to help you and your baby adjust to the new routine. Gradually increase your workload as you feel comfortable and confident. 

4. Communicate with your employer:

Keep open lines of communication with your employer and discuss any specific needs or concerns related to your return to work. Address scheduling preferences, lactation support if applicable, and any necessary accommodations to ensure a smooth transition. 

5. Take care of yourself:

Prioritise self-care during this transition. Adequate rest, nutrition, and exercise are important for your physical and mental well-being. Carve out time for activities that help you relax and recharge. 

6. Manage breastfeeding and pumping:

If you plan to continue breastfeeding, establish a pumping routine and communicate your needs to your employer. Ensure you have a designated, comfortable space for pumping and storing breast milk during your flights. 

7. Seek support from other parents:

Connect with other pilots who have gone through a similar experience or join parenting support groups. Sharing experiences, tips, and challenges with fellow parents can be beneficial and provide a sense of camaraderie. 

8. Prioritise work-life balance:

Strive to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Set boundaries and allocate dedicated time for your family and personal life. Find ways to disconnect from work-related stress during your time off. 

9. Stay updated with regulations and procedures:

Be sure to stay up to date with any changes in regulations or procedures in the aviation industry. Attend recurrent training sessions, stay informed about any policy updates, and maintain your professional knowledge. 

10. Be patient and flexible:

Understand that this transition period may come with its own challenges and adjustments. Be patient with yourself and allow time for you and your family to adapt to the new routine. Stay flexible and open to making necessary adjustments as you navigate the demands of parenthood and your career.
