Burnout

Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion that can occur as a result of chronic workplace stress. There are both early and advanced signs of burnout.

Early signs of burnout may include:

Feeling tired and drained most of the time.

Decreased energy and motivation.

Increased irritability or negativity.

Difficulty concentrating.

Feeling overwhelmed or unproductive.

Changes in sleep patterns or appetite.

Withdrawal from social activities.

Advanced signs of burnout may include:

Chronic fatigue or exhaustion.

Cynicism or detachment from work.

Decreased job satisfaction.

Difficulty completing tasks or assignments.

Emotional detachment or depersonalization.

Increased use of alcohol or drugs to cope.

Physical symptoms such as headaches, back pain, or gastrointestinal problems.

It is important to recognise the early signs of burnout and take action to prevent it from progressing to the advanced stage. Some strategies to prevent and manage burnout include:

Prioritising self-care, such as regular exercise, healthy eating, and adequate sleep.

Setting boundaries between work and personal life.

Practicing mindfulness techniques such as meditation or deep breathing.

Seeking support from colleagues, friends, or a mental health professional.

Taking breaks throughout the day to recharge and refocus.

Practicing stress-reduction techniques such as exercise or relaxation exercises.

By recognising signs of burnout and taking action to prevent and manage them, you can maintain your well-being.
